Dance has deep historical and social importance in Greece. Traditional regional dances continue to be widely performed at celebrations and cultural events. Classical ballet developed more recently and remains concentrated mainly in Athens and other urban centres. Contemporary Greek dance has become increasingly visible internationally through festivals, independent companies and innovative choreographers.
